While there are no federal holidays in March 2021, St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated in the United States on March 17, which is a Wednesday in 2021. Another important event on the March 2021 calendar is the first day of spring or the spring equinox (March 20, 2021).

Facts About March

We think of March as being the third month of the year, but it used to be the first in the old Roman calendar. The Romans are also the ones who named it Martius after the Roman god of war, Mars - yes, same as the planet.

March is one of my favorites months because it’s the first month of spring. And who doesn’t like spring? Everything is greener, the weather is better, it’s warmer and the days are longer.

Two birthstones are associated with March. The first one is aquamarine, a pale bluish green or greenish blue gemstone. For some it represents the sea and it was believed to provide energy (vitality, in this context). The other March birthstone is bloodstone, a dark green stone with red spots, which are, in fact, inclusions of hematite. Because the red spots might look like blood, someone, a long time, came up with the name, bloodstone. If you get over the name, bloodstones are actually supposed to symbolize courage.

The birth flower of March is the daffodil. The daffodil is associated with many things, depending on the culture. Thanks to its early bloom it’s considered to be a symbol of spring and of March.
